Meridiaantunnel

Safety
The Meridiaantunnel in Amersfoort is a connection between the old city an new city of Amersfoort. On daily basis a lot of children and adults use the tunnel by bike or foot. The tunnel had a very dull and maybe even scary look and was regarded by some users as unsafe. The safety-image of this tunnel became one of the major points of discussion in the campaign "Veilig op straat" (safety on the streets). The campaign was launched by the city council to improve the safety on the streets in Amersfoort.

The residents of the Gildekwartier and Binnenstad, students from VMBO het Stromenland and the Boogschutter and the groups 1 to 7 from elementary schools de Jorisschool en het Zuiderkruis converted the tunnel into a fantastic site to see.

Action
Working under the supervision of an art-painter and photographer, the participants worked in workshops on the re-design of the tunnel.

Genesis PD
Genesis PD casted the paintings, made during the workshops. When casted, the paintings are safe from the elements and vandalism. The paintings were placed on the tunnel-wall. The result is a safer and way more colorful tunnel.
